In the clip that I watched, Charlie worked as an industrial worker to produce some iron and steel. In that industry, the boss is the big brother, he has the say to ask their employee work faster, to speed up the assembly line. He even set lots of cameras to monitor their workers to make sure no one is being lazy.
To the workers, they are ask to specialize to work at one particular task, from dawn to dust. It is dull and boring to the workers. And Charlie is the man who screws nuts onto pieces of machinery.
At the very beginning, Charlie is able to keep his work in a comfortable way, however, the boss later asked to speed up the assembly line, Charlie hardly keeps up the speed of the track. And later when Charlie wanted to take a short break in the washroom, suddenly there's a screen and the face of the boss is appeared, and told Charlie go back to work NOW. We can see that Charlie was under a nervous, tried situation in the so-called modern time. Last but now least, the "feeding machine" turns Charlie CRAZY! He eventually cannot fed up with the boss, the working situation and ruin all the machine and hit people there.
And I think the movie is reflecting the nowadays situation. There are many similarity between Charlie's experience with new technology and ours now.
In a very large degree that people are controlled by machine/technology nowadays. In the movie, Charlie was seized by the production line. These days, we are controlled by our computers and smart phones, we are depending on the technology and somehow we forget our "basic skills". For example, we forget how to read a map because Google Map has been directing our way, we feel nervous and uneasy when our cell phones run out of battery. In this sense, technology is controlling our lives.
Besides, CCTV is everywhere. Charlie got monitored by the boss through the camera, and these days CCTVs are everywhere not only in your working space, but also in the Internet. The government may check your email content, your web-history without your acknowledgement. Worse more, every single phones are with a camera, everyone is the town may be the boss to monitor your behavior, once you are being abnormal, then we can see you on Youtube!

回覆刪除It provides the reader with a good understanding about the topic and meaning of the movie.
This entry could be a bit more personal, you could f.x give the reader and insight into your own opinion, since they are reading about the movie on your blog.
I don't think we forget our basic skills. Maybe we just invent new ones. And before being controlled by the machines he invented for his comfort, the human-being was controlled by the nature, which is quite indifferent to his fate. Human liberty is a never-solved matter.

回覆刪除Marietta, 13.10.2014 ; Great post Tony. I like the examples you provided us with how we are held in technology`s hands. Maybe you could also refer to the movie Truman Show ! It`s almost exact situation. We can be watched without even knowing, it happened to Truman Burbank whose life was broadcasted as a reality show 24/7. Do you also think we forget basic skills? Do you think it`s bad or actually good for us as we develop ourselves? However, the question could be raised here about the direction we are developing towards to.
